WHAT IS COMBINED HEAT AND POWER (CHP)

Combined heat and power (CHP), also known as cogeneration, is an efficient, clean, and reliable approach to generating power and thermal energy from a single fuel source. Installation of a CHP system designed to meet a facility’s thermal and electrical base loads can greatly increase the facility's operational efficiency and correspondingly decrease energy costs. At the same time, a properly sized CHP system will usually reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, which contribute to global climate change, over the alternative of using utility power and firing a package boiler.

The CHP system promotes power reliability as well, using the utility grid supply as a backup or supplementary source of power.

More information on CHP can be found at the US EPA CHP Partnership.
