Because of the ready use of the gas turbine’s high quality heat in wastewater treatment plants’ digestion process, nearly all installations are examples of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) . The exhaust heat is used to make either hot water or steam to heat the digester tanks.

It is also possible to produce high quality steam and send it to a steam turbine generator prior to feeding the digester tanks. Solar’s first gas turbines operating on digester gas went into a plant utilizing this design back in the late 1980’s and they are still running today. The cost savings to the facility over the years exceeds millions of dollars as the gas turbines provide most of the plant’s power needs and all the heat it requires.
